Last night, I got to take the two older girls to see Brass Impact, a Drum Corps International competition event. OMG, it was so awesome I almost died. Our seats were pretty darn good, we were able to find PB's friend for after-show visiting, and we had some breezes in the shade most of the time. Also, caramel popcorn.

They were throwing! sabers! And there were metaphorical angels and demons and vampires! Also the French Revolution. And then some things I didn't quite understand but which involved terribly mod moving structures on the field. One of the groups did a version of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" that had most of the folks in my section in tears. Did I mention the sabers?

The drum majors were so adorably SERIOUS.

This was pretty epic stuff. I lost count of the number of times I got goosebumps from the BIG SOUND and the drumming drums. So. Much. Fun. If I could view/post video at the office I'd totally be spamming you all with YouTube today.

It was kind of a festival of band-geek delights. The girls were really into it, and it wasn't difficult to get carried away. Lots of sound, color, and movement...some of it tremendously clever (like the mylar-like flags that made *unbelievable* sounds at one point). Very immersive in its own way.

All the kids performing seemed to be having a genuinely great time, too. (And I will call them kids becuase they are all half my age or younger. DCI is mostly college-age, with some HS seniors mixed in.)

If I heard correctly, the finals for this summer series will be shown on local movie screens later in August. Or something.

Yep, I believe it's the first week in August...tickets are usually something like $30 though, and it's through AMC. Drum corps is AMAZING. I was in the Troopers after high school (they are from Casper, WY, and rarely make it to our area for performances), but wasn't able to march with them in the summer.

Tickets for last night were $25 each. I've heard PB has a connection with somebody who knows somebody who can get some tickets to the finals. There is a DCI mafia. Who knew?

Just forwarded you the email DCI sent out a couple weeks ago...it's in theaters on August 11th. I don't have my kiddo, so I could actually go!
