Today, I am finding sunshine in unexpected places, thank all the little gods.

Frexampul: [livejournal.com profile] beatonna, a namesake. Also, a Candadian and creator of clever historical webcomics, who has a very adorable way of using exclamation points.

My father's family came to New England by way of Nova Scotia (where his French relatives experienced [a friendliness] with the Huron Indians, probably because both cultures were badass -- or bastardly, depending on your perspective -- and then they all [got along well with] the Scots), so I have a little fantasy world in which I am related to this person named Kate. How's that for an awkward sentence?

I love [livejournal.com profile] beatonna!!! I bought her print of the Tesla comic and framed it. It's beyond awesome. She makes me want to read Canadian history, which has to be some sort of miracle worthy of beatification.

Yes. I found her through your LJ, I think, because of that very entry. She fills me with glee. (Dad has a lot of history degrees, see.)

We went to Nova Scotia once, when I was about six. I don't remember much about it, except that we tromped through a lot of cemetaries. My brother and I earned a nickel for every gravestone we found with the name "Beaton" engraved upon it.

The Scots are indeed an awesome people.
As the (alleged) novel I am (allegedly) working on is partly set in Scotland in 1746 (Jacobite Rebellion), you have inspired me to continue with it.
Perhaps I can work a "Kate" into it.
I was not totally happy with my first choice "Peig"

I am woefully undereducated, when it comes to the history of the Scots in general and my father's family in particular. I am informed that we are of Clan MacDonald and have a fine tradition of being thugs with brains. Not so bad, that.

I'll look forward to hearing more about your (alleged) book!
