Turns out, the floor *underneath* the yucky yellow linoleum in my kitchen is made of black and white tiles, arranged in a checkerboard pattern.

Who knew? I think it looks kinda sharp in a retro way.

It looks *very* different than the yellow linoleum, but certainly no worse, and it cleaned up pretty well once we pulled all the fershmugenden staples out. Many thanks to [livejournal.com profile] diermuid and the crew -- I could not have gotten it done so swiftly or happily without the help. We'll see if my Realtor shits a kitten when she sees it; I think not. (She's also bringing a handyman along, to offer an estimate on fixing the front steps. YAY.)

Continuing mild improvements include: Repaint the dark blue bedroom in neutral color; finish off the upstairs bathroom with a floor (only a 9x6 space, so not so hard); repaint kitchen in neutral colors. I would be pleased to have this sequence interrupted by a house sale at any time, but each incremental improvement is meaningful. Additionally, each of these projects will only require about $50 in cash outlay and about 12 hours (or less) of effort.

(Under the checkerboard is some of the Black Abomination -- sticky, even -- and hardwood floor. If the house has not sold by the time tax refunds roll through, and I'm in a financial decision to do so, then the checkerboard is coming up when I rent a floor sander and refinish all the downstairs floors. But that's a few projects down the list.)

Here's something I thought of while actually using the upstairs facilities. The lino up there is not exactly awful. Would it be simpler/cheaper to get a latex paint remover and clean it up?

Taking an omen, were we?

Leaving one, maybe?

Okay, that was perfectly awful. I apologize profusely in a not-really-very-sorry way.

Heh. I was pretty awful in my reply, so HA.

As it happens, I already had the tiles for the upstairs bathroom. I just haven't gotten around to actually installing the stuff. I might do it this evening if my grip strength recovers to the point where I can (safely) use the utility knife to trim the tiles.

In other news, my Tomboy Tools are performing magnificently.
