saffronhare: (So Sayeth Severity)
[personal profile] saffronhare
So, I'm seeing people posting about faire this year, and I begin to angst about what I'll wear for the one day I perhaps get out there. (sigh) Yeah, I'm making friends with my vanity, finally.

Late-night brainstorming, fueled by the desire to goof off and not wash any more dishes, brought forth the following idea: I should dust off my fencing garb. Wear the fencing jacket, and bribe the leathermaking fiends in my social circle to help me with vambraces and breeches. I've even got an unadorned ring belt.

I'm going to see if cavalier boots are made for legs as short as mine, and look into dye for my white leather gloves. Plus, I will certainly need a rapier. Oh, yes, I will. This idea pleases me greatly, mostly because it doesn't involve me doing all the work myself, because I won't do it if it's just for me. It'll also leave me free to indulge in costuming other people, which I'm willing to pull all-nighters for. Go figure.

Now, it's off to bed. The first alarm goes off at 6 a.m., and I really don't want it to hit me like the judgement of an angry god. XO

EDIT: Well, that's fun. I just tried to post a comment to your reply, [livejournal.com profile] chaosdruid, and it 'sploded on me. All gone. Gah.

FURTHER UPDATE: Shit. Surely I can find them for a bit less. Any maybe in a dark brown instead of black. http://www.swordsofhonor.com/womthig.html

Now, now... I was saying I would look like a balloon at 150. Considering you have at least 5 inches on me in height, I think 150 would look considerably better on you.

I understood that. :) But the joke looked really awful once I saw it in electron form on the screen, so I tried to go back and change it and...gah. See you later this evening. XO

Yep, I'm looking forward to tonight. (and then we can all look like balloons after indulging in cheesecake)

Oh, yes. I have plans to crawl over people, if I have to, to finish any leftover cheesecake. :)

That sounds like a lovely outfit. Should you need to borrow a blade, I may be of assistance.

Oh, how you talk. ;)

I remember the rule about non-cast people not being able to have blades...or else have them "bound" in some way. Makes sense.

I think I will only ask to borrow a blade (or insist upon purchasing one) if we'll have a second weekend out there, without the kids. Having any sort of blade attached to me while I'm wrangling children is just a recipe for irritation, if not not outright disaster.

Thank you!

::The Look of "Did you really just say that?::

Just so you know: whatever your objectively measured weight may be, you do not, in fact, subjectively present as a "balloon."

Yeah, I know. That's the part of the comment I was trying to adjust when things went all kablooey.

See, D made a comment yesterday (hi, honey!) about how she'd look like a balloon at 150. I'm just a few inches taller, and weigh in at 160ish. Granted, I'm built like a Mack Truck (my wrists are about as big around as a man's), but still. Anyway, it was much funnier in my head than it was on the screen. Nevermind. Gah. Carry on. :)

Dear gods, was that really just yesterday? I had forgotten it completely, thus missing the joke. As you say, gah.

Heh, I visualize chocolate vambraces, with saffron-colored celtic rabbits on them. Although that's not very SCA, and I usually do SCA-weight stuff.

On the other hand, what better to go with a swashbuckling outfit but full-weight vambraces?

I have another project dreamed up first though... something special and unique for the wifey-poo. 8-) If I can manage it, it will be cool. ACtually, I had a number of brain-blasts last night. They're all secrets though... shhhhh! 8-)

Well, my fencing jacket had to pass SCA safety standards, so it ain't exactly a delicate piece o'work. I'd prefer to rally some vambraces that would pass an armor inspection, since I'd like to get back into fencing at some future date anyway.

I'll let you know if the barter system will need to be invoked for leatherworking. Thanks!

Since you're usually pretty swamped, maybe I'll just make it a billboard for Diermuid.com and market my wares... if I ever get that motivated. 8-) Hell, I think my domain registration lapsed, it's possibly the realm of cyber-squatters now.

I may come look at it sometime, but I have some idea of the price range in which rapiers fall...and it's way out of my budget right now. Thank you for the offer -- hope the day goes well for you.

you'd be surprised at our prices. generally our high end swords do not go above 250 bucks. the rapier i have i believe is along the lines of 50 or below. i know some of our lower end (although functional) swords are 39 bucks. i'll check the price and get back to you.
