Here's what we've discovered so far:
1. Sanding is a pain in the ass, even with a nifty palm sander.
2. Stripping all the paint off will take forever, plus require sanding anyway.
3. There's this neat product that sort of etches and de-glosses. You sort of scrub it into the surface, wait about 15 minutes and apply your basecoat.
Last night's experiement revealed that option #3, while possibly the stinkiest, seems to be the fastest and most efficient use of elbow grease. We'll need to use the sanding and stripping in some areas, but the de-glossing may be the way to go with most of the trim.
We will perhaps manage to begin on trim this weekend.
