With the hallway painting nearly done (except for whatever nifty faux effect we'll be attempting), it's time to consider how we'll do the trim. The lovely kittenpants helped us pick some beautiful browns to do it with. We just didn't know how we'd prep the trim. See, the paint there now is very glossy and painting directly over it will result in peeling latex (like we're experiencing in the kitchen).

Here's what we've discovered so far:
1. Sanding is a pain in the ass, even with a nifty palm sander.
2. Stripping all the paint off will take forever, plus require sanding anyway.
3. There's this neat product that sort of etches and de-glosses. You sort of scrub it into the surface, wait about 15 minutes and apply your basecoat.

Last night's experiement revealed that option #3, while possibly the stinkiest, seems to be the fastest and most efficient use of elbow grease. We'll need to use the sanding and stripping in some areas, but the de-glossing may be the way to go with most of the trim.

We will perhaps manage to begin on trim this weekend.

I think it would be a toss up which smelled worse, the Kilz or the degloss.

The latex Kilz isn't so bad. The oil-based is a Bludger to the sinuses, though.
