Did I mention our waterbed had a leak? Yeah. Nothing catastrophic and sudden, but it definitely could not be ignored.

Husband was a HERO yesterday and bought a friggin’ new waterbed mattress/bladder thing, as well as a new liner and an electric pump (which kept the draining effort to less than an hour instead of DAYS). Word to the wise: electric/power water pump is the way to go. Don't let the noise scare you away.

We finished draining things last night and OMG is it ever heavy to move. The both of us working together could barely fold and flop it out of the frame and onto a blanket on the floor, which we can hopefully use to *drag* that sucker outta the room and to whatever storage/repair spot it needs to go to. It’s heavy enough that I have fantasies of just incorporating it into the décor, but it’d smell bad pretty soon and I keep having to climb over it to get to the bathroom, so that’s probably not the best option.

I mean, diermuid moves 400-pound treadmills for a living and I’m not exactly a delicate flower. It was like trying to budge a sleeping walrus.

Got the insides of the frame all dried out overnight – thankfully not all mildewed like we feared – and I cleaned it all out this morning before work. YUCK. There’s a lot of tiny debris and bits of dog hair that get stuck between a waterbed mattress and the frame, let me tell you. But the liner was really doing its job, because hardly any of the water that was stuck between the mattress and the liner actually got out onto the wood. It was just where the mattress pad thingie had wicked up moisture that it was dampened. Ew. But also WHEW.

I’m sure you were dying to know all this, right? With luck, we can place the new liner and mattress today and start filling it up! Not sure how long it takes to fill and heat the water to “some temperature warmer than whatever comes out of the garden hose.” It was really cool to see that the brand of the heater installed is "Land and Sky." HA. No sea, though...maybe that's implied in the FRIGGING WATERBED. I will be really delighted not to be sleepig on camp pads in the living room some night soon. :)

This is not a new waterbed, but it's very very awesome. We're filling it now. Man, that water is COLD. Matthew says it'll take about four days for the heater to make it warm. :: sadface ::

I bet it'd only take three days if you could convince the baby cow to sleep on it in the meantime.

That's an excellent point. We're totally sleepin' on it tonight. Lots of extra blankets between us and the mattress. Can't be any colder than sleeping on the ice (as in on a frozen lake) in Northern Minnesota, right?

The one we purchased this week isn't an innercoil...a more noticeable difference than I would have expected. Sleep comfort is still quite good, but there's more sloshiness without the innercoils. Still. As an emergency replacement, it's good that we were able to find a good replacement quickly.

You will find that you are used to it (the cooler temps) by the end of the second night.

It was very comfy -- the first night in a while that I haven't felt overheated, actually. My husband is the "chilly willy," who wants the house set at 72 degrees all winter. I spent many winters in Northern Europe, though, where the military and civilian housing wasn't exactly the best-insulated stuff, and where you just bundled up for the chill. Having the house warmer than 69 degrees feels weird to me. The mockery shifts direction in the summertime. :)
