Self-Centered Moment

saffronhareIt's as if the kids deliberately choose to dedicate themselves to activities that make me uncomfortable. I swear, they push my comfort zone more than anything else!
First, there was gymnastics -- where everything (including the Mom Corps) was terribly sparkly, and I had to learn elaborate french braiding, and I needed to teach rowdy groups of small children how to walk on the balance beam in order to defray some of the gym fees.
Next, there was soccer -- where I got to help coach a team of first- and second-graders. (That's not over yet; I'm committed to the spring season too.)
Then, there was Brownies -- where I'm suddenly a Troop Leader, wearing the t-shirt and drinking the Kool-Aid (hell, I *bring* the Kool-Aid). I'm surrounded by cases of cookies awaiting delivery to girls. And did I mention I'm also signed up to go sleep on the ice in northern Minnesota in mid-February? Yeah. (That's scouting too, but not Brownies.)
Now? Now, Rowan's going to be in a fashion show. It's a local fancy-dress shop that's putting on a prom preview event. We're going to her first fitting tomorrow. The event itself is later in the month. (http://www.nataliem.com/newsreleases.aspx?n=3) I mean, it's not like I'm walking the runway myself...it's just that she's counting on me to be the Mom Who Knows Stuff. I'm going to have to go and get informed so I can help her feel safe and ready. ACK.
How self-centered that all sounds. I'm glad they're growing up and finding things for themselves and loving their interests and all that. It won't be long before they don't want me to be involved in anything they're doing, so these opportunities are precious. I just feel fiercely uncomfortable moving through these circles and needed a moment to whine about it. These moments just mess with my brain likewhoa.
