Note to self: You really, really love your bike. And you really, really love riding it around. Do that more, okay?

Over the last few days, we've been riding bikes a lot.* It's helped that the weather during the daytime is great, I haven't had to go much of anywhere out of town, and I haven't had to transport anybody who couldn't just ride their own darn bike along with me.

One of the advantages of living in a relatively small town is that 'most everything can be gotten to by bicycle if one is clever about the route. (Very few dedicated bike paths/lanes and unpredictable sidewalks mean a certain amount of peril on main roads, so I tend to navigate around those.) Heck, we put the cargo baskets on the back and rode to the liquor store on Saturday night!

On Saturday, [livejournal.com profile] diermuid helped me test a bike commute route to the office, and it's totally do-able. The ride is only about 30 minutes at a fairly relaxed pace (as in, not arriving super-sweaty) through mostly residential areas. I'm very excited to give part-time bike commuting a try. It's only a 3-mile trip by car, so I won't be saving a lot of fuel over the short term, but it does add up...and this will be about 60 minutes of activity I wouldn't normally have in my day, which *also* adds up.

Gotta look at the weather report and shake up my morning routine. If I want to make this work, my mornings cannot be as last-minute as they've been the past couple of weeks.

*My bike is a Sedona DX, purchased with some of my "stimulus" money a few years ago. It is, as the guys on BBC's Top Gear might say, something of a "stately saloon." I call it my Bentley. Very comfy ride...a bit heavy, but plenty fast for my preferences. (How's that for criss-crossing fandom references?)

I'd like to ride a bike more often... But we lack areas to safely do it where we live as well. However, on Monday the girls at work and I are going to start walking on Mon, Tues, and Thurs.

Hooray for action! Ordinarily, I couldn't have managed a bike commute simply because I needed to be Taxi Mom or Errand Mom during the day. Now, though, I've got help at home and kids whose lives (while still busy) are a bit less drive-around-y.

You are a lot braver than me as I see your weather reports seems filled with thunderstorms. Stay dry.

Alas...it looks like tomorrow will not be a Good Day for biking. But Thursday looks better!

I am not even a tiny bit brave about riding in traffic; all my routes must have sidewalks and crosswalks. It's lucky for me that the ride is pretty short and flat, with plenty of places to take shelter along the way if I need it. I also have a husband who loves to rescue damsels in distress. :)
