I don't really like Halloween. At. All.

Never liked figuring out a character to be, putting a costume together for myself, trick-or-treating, or even all the candy. That said, I *do* have a good time helping other folks get what they want and seeing them on their way. But after that? I'd prefer to just close the door and turn out the light and be done with it.

I suspect this is another nail in my fuddy-duddy coffin, but there you go. :)

Sadness! I love Halloween. But I love costumes, so ...

Life is a bell curve, sweetie. Just holding down my standard deviation here. :)

I've not been as into this holiday myself. Coming up with a costume always felt like a test for me, and usually it was one that I didn't pass terribly well. I'm ok handing out the candy to the neighborhood kids, but I'm not the "cool mom" that dresses up and goes all out with decorations. I felt guilty that I wasn't making the holiday special enough for my kids. But the fun part was realizing that not every holiday has to be Big or Important or Special, yet the kids will still enjoy it. Sometimes you can just relax and enjoy without making a big deal of it.
I don't think you're a fuddy-duddy. I think it's great that you can recognize what you prefer and be ok with it.

I *will* say, however, that I'm an aspecting junkie. So maybe that's sort of like costuming -- but for ritual purposes. Feels somehow different to me. So there you go.

Yeah, I think that's been important. Figuring out what's essential to making it fun for the kids and my friends, without verging into not-fun for me.

I like Halloween ok. I've been more into costuming than I am this year. Previously, it's been frustrating because there's not usually something for me to DO once I'm all dressed up. I don't strictly 'party' and I don't want to trick-or-treat myself now that I'm a grown up. I've always wished I lived somewhere where I would have a high volume of kid trick-or-treaters. That sounds like fun to me, getting all dolled up in an impressive costume and handing out candy whilst I otherwise get to sit quietly in my own home, where it is warm (I grew up in Alaska - Halloween is varying degrees of 'pretty chilly' to 'holy crap why am I outdoors right now').

Now, Halloween has become a lot more fun since I started getting more serious about NaNoWriMo, since Halloween night also happens to be the more-important NaNo kickoff night. And that's always super duper fun, with or without dressing up.

I've always loved Halloween because of making costumes for the girls. We've always had a strict division of labor, though. I make the costumes, and he slogs through the rain and snow to take the trick-or-treating. If he ever gripes about it, then I remind him that he'll have to be in charge of the sewing part next year. He usually shuts up at that point.

It was also grand fun in grad school. The seminary community was tight-knit, and it was amazing to watch the kids of students from overseas have their first Halloween. Cool holiday, right? You dress up, knock on the door, and they give you candy!

Since there have been no costumes involving me, or costumes at all, it's become sort of meh. Last year, Maggie was Elsewhere with a friend, so we went out for dinner and coffee afterwards. Not so bad if that's the new tradition. :-)

See? That's the kind of tradition I like! This year, it's almost that good: The girls are with [livejournal.com profile] agrnmn.

I used to love Halloween. But once I was out of College and had no parties to dress for, no candy to TorT for, no real reason, it has sort of lost it's appeal.
