saffronhare: (Because I'm the Mom)

This weekend, Kira Deara got her ears pierced. It's traditionally a seventh-birthday sort of ritual, but she lobbied very well for the notion of *receiving* earrings for her birthday, pointing out how it would make sense to pierce her ears early enough that they'd be healed for the Actual Birthday.

We happened to be at the mall for Rowie to do a bit of shopping with gift cards burning a hole in her pocket. The piercing place was uncrowded, so we went for it. She was a very brave little toaster. Sat super-still even through all the prep and hardly sniffled afterwards...it helped that we delivered right away on the second part of the tradition -- ice cream!

Perhaps ten minutes had passed before she remembered that [livejournal.com profile] featherynscale had promised the someday loan/gifting of some dragonfly earrings when she had her ears pierced. Is that so, K? I suspect it was a private conversation, but she mentioned it again today, so just be aware that she's coming after them!

Also: We talked about Halloween costumes, and she described in more detail the outfit a "demon princess" would wear. Apparently, fingerless fishnet gloves were essential. So the mall trip included a visit to Hot Topic, which is a place I figured would have such things. And OMG. The way her face lit up when we walked in! She started grooving to the music and admiring the clothes. We did find the very gloves she was talking about (sweet girl gave me credit for maybe being able to knit them, but we purchased them, thankyouverymuch). She also looked at tiaras, saying her costume should include one, but lamenting that there were no BLACK tiaras to be found. (At this pronouncement, a Hot Topic staff member burst into laughter.)

When I relayed this story to [livejournal.com profile] diermuid, he suggested to her that we use some high-gloss spray paint to transform an plain tiara into a black one. Hmm...she considered it, and then allowed that it might work, but *only* if we had some glitter to sprinkle over it so be sure it was sparkly enough.

With Rowie's help, she has redefined the costume concept as "Princess Midnight." (sigh)

I may well have made that statement. I'm not sure what the hell I would have been talking about, though. I can certainly acquire some dragonfly earrings for the festival of Kira's birthday.

Also, I think tiara + black gloss paint + spray adhesive + black and silver sugar sand glitter would = excellent Princess Midnight attire.

*grin* Congrats to her on the ear-piercing! It took me two trips to get up enough courage the first time I got mine pierced.

I love kids and costume-choosing on Halloween. :D I'm about to post a pic of Gavin in his.

It was such a hoot to watch her mull over the suggestion and re-engineer things in her mind before she added to it. I happen to have a tiara in the house from when I aspected Aset, and I think Princess Midnight would be an appropriate re-tooling of the prop.

She's also passionately excited about the idea of *making* earrings, and seems to have some Concepts in mind. Just so you know.

After Fiona Pie got hers done (about 18 months ago), she wasn't so sure about it, but in recent months has gotten more and more certain of herself. I sort of sprung it on her..."Hey, we're here now. Do you want to just get it done?" She was ready for it, so YAY. Very pleased with herself and doing well with after-care so far.

This would of course explain why we kept seeing dragonfly stuff when we were looking for bees.

I think I can help here. ...it was me... but damned if I know where they are. [face palm] They were in a little container I had on the kitchen sink window sill. I didn't even know they were in there and she took a liking to the container (which had Dorothy's red slippers on it) and first asked me for it and when I said I rather liked it, she discovered the hidden treasure inside (I didn't even know they were in there) So "sure, one day when it's relevant you can have them..." I'm sure I said... lol

::giggle::

It's likely you'll see her over the weekend. Maybe you two can chat then? But I doubt [livejournal.com profile] featherynscale is off the hook, because NOW she's all about making the jewelry.

Sorry, folks. :)

You do realize that the inconsistent tradition will be talked about 10+ 15+ years from now as, "Kira always got what she wanted. I had to wait till I my 7th birthday before I got *my* ears pierced." :-)

Glad she was such a trooper about it!
