saffronhare: (There I Was)

Had a very good first night with the new puppy last night. In fact, I'd say it was the absolute easiest first night with a new puppy I can recall in my life. And that's saying something.

He's an American Eskimo Dog mix. Mom was found, staked out in a parking lot, when she was very pregnant. He looks a lot like his daddy was a Jack Russell Terrier, and the other puppy we saw looked like a Boston Terrier. So...hard to say for sure. His coat isn't ploofy like an Eskie; but it's not wiry like a Jack Russell, either. Very smooth and silky-soft. Mostly white with very JRT markings and face shape. He's 10 pounds at 10 weeks, so they figure he'll probably max out at 20-25 pounds. Action-sized and pleasantly sturdy. No barking or whining or nipping at all.

No pictures yet, because I suck, but I bet Rowan will have him all over FB today. She's staying home again today -- her color was just not good yesterday, and just going to a rehearsal for an hour really wrung her out. One more day to drink tea and hack things outta her lungs will probably do her some good. (And I'd decided on this before the puppy even came into the picture. It just worked out all serendipitous like that.)

Jack walks really well on his leash. I think he's going to be a marvelous little buddy. We all walked to the bus stop together and the girls waved goodbye before they got on the bus. He's eating and drinking just fine; no accidents in the house so far. It's bound to happen at some point because housetraining generally has a bit of error in it, but he's getting into the groove of doing his business outside, so YAY for that.

Tomorrow, I have the day off work because little girls have a School Improvement Day and they'll be home. We're going to have Adventures. I was too superstitious to pick up a kennel for him yesterday, before the rescue folks did their home visit, so we need to get that...plus a brush, some food/water dishes, and a tag. The Heart Bandits let us keep the harness/leash he already had, so we're set until he outgrows those.

Thank you. It's a pretty crazy move, but I'm aiming for good-crazy instead of bad-crazy.

The girls are completely charmed by him. Fiona commented that it's a good thing he's not a human boy -- because then it'd be tricky for all of us girls to be in love with him at the same time! (And she said this even *after* she got to carry a bag of poop to the dumpster.)

Oh to be a puppy in a house full of girls! I'd love a puppy but it's rare to find a rental that allows dogs (or cats). Can't wait for the photos!

I've already had to tell Kira that we're not going to buy him any "puppy clothes." ::eyeroll
