Not that kind of love, but still. My heartstrings were totally being tugged during the viewing of last night's Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show (we caught the last 90 minutes or so, which included the Herding group as well as Best of Show).

It's a fun family activity. We talk about the breeds and pick our own favorites and make jokes about grooming. We even do little voiceovers for the dogs that seem to have attitude, which is most of them. Example: There was a Dandie Dinmont (terrier?) in the Best of Show group. A fairly low-slung dog that was also fairly well-hung. The narration from [livejournal.com profile] agrnmn about how this dog might have felt about trotting around the ring and how handsome he felt had us falling off the couches with laughter.

I <3 doggies. It was a very happy 90 minutes. Except for when I was crying during the Pedigree commercials. Hell, I'm dripping tears on the keyboard just thinking about it.

Jeepers, that's a great series of ads, especially the pet adoption messages. David Duchovny's most excellent narration (I like to think he's a Dog Person too). Lots of doggies -- purebread and mutt, young and old. I loved them and I hated them and can only be grateful I only watched 90 minutes instead of the whole fecking show. "I'm a good dog," you hear, "I just want to go home."

I swear, if we'd been watching that show on a Saturday afternoon...say, when Wayside Waifs or another shelter was open...we'd have another dog This Very Minute. Maybe more than one. I was that overwrought. ::sigh:: Stoopid, but true. I am a danger to myself and others.

Some of my best childhood memories are from dog shows. My parents owned a kennel, and we showed dogs all the time. The dogs I trained were obedience and field dogs, rather than confirmation, and it was great fun. I loved obedience showing because it was about the training and the dog's smarts and your relationship with the dog, and not so much politics and genetics. Good times.
