hopefully not spoilerish
Dec. 20th, 2006 09:54 amThis year, we're making a lot of our holiday gifts. And those that aren't made are intentionally "clutter-free" kinds of things -- like a zoo membership for
agrnmn's folks. I'm very happy about this. Honestly, I don't think it affects the budget much, but it's really nice to spend time making things. Hard to say if certain things will be done by Yule, but most of it should be done by December 25th and I figure it's not much of a "gift of love" if I make myself crazy-sad trying to finish it with a bunch of all-nighters, right? (The cool thing about zoo memberships is that they don't take any time to wrap and ship.)
So very grateful that the little ones are getting to be old enough that I can have a sewing binge last a few days. It was really tough, waiting until they were in bed to start and then having to put away every night. These days, I can sort of shove it all off to the side with a reasonable expectation that they'll leave things alone for a little while. It still clutters of our lives, but it's not the hazard it used to be. Funny: wer're now in NaCoFiMo (National Costume Finishing Month, through January 15th).
Also, we're making cranberry bread for neighbors. We delivered decorated cookies and other baked stuff to our neighbors last year, and their response was so touching that I want to make it a tradition. See, we're surrounded by much older people. I think the youngest set of neighbors is about the age of my parents...then it jumps up to 75+. The oldest is Mrs. Myers, who is either 93 or 94 years old. It's possible many of them have dietary restrictions that mean they can't actually eat the treats we bring them, but WOW -- did their faces ever light up to see the kids at the door with a plate of goodies last year!
Sorry if I didn't manage to strike an agreeable balance of sharing vs. cryptic. Just pleased, and wanted to share a little. :)
