ETA: Whoops. Had my days mixed up. Saturday was when I got to deck
niveus_tigris. Sunday was when we went to faire. Both events were tremendous fun. As always, the tiger was a sooper good sport. :)
The fambly went out to Faire for much ofSaturdaySunday, and it was wondrous fun. We'd meant to make it for opening gate; as it was, we were close enough to hear the cannon and see the puff of smoke. I went a bit "squee!" with excited anticipation, which had
princessboredom marveling for most of the day. I did it a second time, but that's later in the story.
With help from
niveus_tigris and his grommeting skillz, I finished the new dress for
princessboredom by 9 p.m. and got to bed shortly after on Saturday night. Whew! By contrast, last year I didn't finish Princess PrettySchool's dress until about 3 a.m., which made for a cranky mommy the next day at faire. Not ideal. This time, I was well-rested and very pleased with everyone's outfits -- including my own. At the last minute (like, after breakfast), I decided to wear my fencing jacket just to be a bit spruced up. Many thanks to the gracious
capriciouslass for getting us in gratis. Meeting up with
fionnabhar, her husband in his sexay pants, and her daughter in the Bodice that Was Tighter was also groovy.
I can't express how great it is, to finally know some folks out at faire these past couple of years. I get to see familiar faces and play with people a bit -- makes the whole thing much less overwhelming for me. That, and the girls are getting old enough that they're finding their own fun. We set
princessboredom and
dragon_sword free for an hour or so at a time...which they loved, particularly since they had some cash to do their own shopping. PB got her picture taken a few times -- including a notable episode with Japanese tourists -- so I guess the new gown was a hit. She also got her hair braided and acquired a strange little dragonish-puppet thingie, thing which we wouldn't have spent our own money on, but for which she'd mowed a lawn to earn the cash.
Princess !Kaboom and Princess PrettySchool looked lovely in their gowns, though the youngest might not fit into hers for another year. PK lost patience with hers at lunchtime, but the other princess was Just Fine for the entire time. PK was all about the rides and the games; PPS liked the shows. PK flared with a lot of energy and burned out by the end; PPS probably could have stayed until close. (shrug) Different kids, for sure. PPS even got to see the Queen in the Enchanted Realm before we left. This is the child who cannot be bothered to approach Santa and who took months to warm up to her grandmother. But the Queen? She almost pushed the guards out of the way! Once she was summoned, she went right up and sat in the queen's lap and they chatted for a good long time. Bless that woman -- she's amazing. There's a little token that PPS wore until bedtime, saying "The Queen gave this to me, because we're special friends." Very serious about the whole thing, too. Thankfully,
agrnmn got pictures.
I'd forgotten how drastic my haircut was, or how it alters the way I look. To me, I'm Simply Myself...to others, I'm nigh unrecognizable. Part of me would still like to find a day to go out to faire before it closes, when I can simply be me and not Mom on Duty, but aside from tickets and time, there's the whole Garb Struggle. Bleh. And Gah.
Anyway. The second episode of "squee!" happened when we got to go see the SCA fighing demo. Having hung around the heavy fighters for a little while, I knew enough names to really cheer them on. I hooted and hollered and clapped and stomped and had a grand time. I'm all motivated now, to finish up my armor and get my ass on the field so I can maybe participate next year. (Pipe dream, but still fun to contemplate.) Again, PB said: Did Mom just squeak?!?! Messed with her world, that did.
By a bit after 3 p.m., PK was All Done. PB had been a trooper in the heat, and we were all starting to get hungry again. Rather than spend another $87 on food, we headed home. All in all, a splendid day. There were a million other things I wanted to do -- like spend more time listening to some of the entertainers -- but I'm pleased with each and every choice I made with our time and energy. It was Good.
