The miracle of "acting as if"

After a few days of griping and moaning about my solitary New Year's Eve tonight, I find that "acting as if" is really paying off for me today. When I looked at it honestly, I realized that I'd be grateful on just about any other night for a bit of quiet time at home with nothing in particular to do. I can paint, or resurrect the kitchen floor, or read, or do nothing at all. It's entirely up to me. (Why, yes, I'm a textbook introvert. Why do you ask?)

This shift in attitude has made such a difference that I kindly turned down an offer of companionable hanging out with a couple of close friends this evening, bless 'em for the offer. Then, a few minutes ago, I pulled the Hermit card out of the basket of laundry I was folding. I've tucked him into my pocket for the day, so we can keep each other company. :)

I've got one outing planned today -- a few hours of visiting -- but we should be home by dark. I'm very happy about this. Happy New Year, everyone. May you find an agreeable balance of exuberance and care for yourselves and loved ones tonight and throughout the year.
