saffronhare: (Biking)
Note to self: You really, really love your bike. And you really, really love riding it around. Do that more, okay?

Over the last few days, we've been riding bikes a lot.* It's helped that the weather during the daytime is great, I haven't had to go much of anywhere out of town, and I haven't had to transport anybody who couldn't just ride their own darn bike along with me.

One of the advantages of living in a relatively small town is that 'most everything can be gotten to by bicycle if one is clever about the route. (Very few dedicated bike paths/lanes and unpredictable sidewalks mean a certain amount of peril on main roads, so I tend to navigate around those.) Heck, we put the cargo baskets on the back and rode to the liquor store on Saturday night!

On Saturday, [livejournal.com profile] diermuid helped me test a bike commute route to the office, and it's totally do-able. The ride is only about 30 minutes at a fairly relaxed pace (as in, not arriving super-sweaty) through mostly residential areas. I'm very excited to give part-time bike commuting a try. It's only a 3-mile trip by car, so I won't be saving a lot of fuel over the short term, but it does add up...and this will be about 60 minutes of activity I wouldn't normally have in my day, which *also* adds up.

Gotta look at the weather report and shake up my morning routine. If I want to make this work, my mornings cannot be as last-minute as they've been the past couple of weeks.

*My bike is a Sedona DX, purchased with some of my "stimulus" money a few years ago. It is, as the guys on BBC's Top Gear might say, something of a "stately saloon." I call it my Bentley. Very comfy ride...a bit heavy, but plenty fast for my preferences. (How's that for criss-crossing fandom references?)
