Why

One of the things I find it important to keep track of, in this ongoing work toward being stronger and more healthy, is WHY. Certainly, vanity is a factor, but it's a vascillating thing and not so great for sustained effort. (Body image and self-talk are fickle!)

I try to think of it in terms of owning as much of my long-term destiny as possible. For instance, my father lives with Type-2 diabetes and my mother had breast cancer. There are only very few risk factors for those two diseases I can control at this point, and body fat/BMI/weight is a biggie. That's why you'll hear me use those metrics quite specifically...because they are meaningful for what I want to achieve.

Progress since October: 15 pounds shed so far, which is roughly equivalent to pre-Kira-pregnancy weight. Approximately 25 pounds to go to reach a healthy weight range for my height (taking into account my general "thug" build).

My mother is also increasingly frail. I am certain my dedication to strength, flexibility, and athletic pursuit have been higher than hers thus far, but it's painful to watch not only her diminishing functionality, but also to realize how small her sense of what's possible was to begin with. I want to hold off the "falling and getting hurt" phase of aging as long as possible. It's possible something like her late-onset MS is in my future. I am grateful that, with the exception of the structural issues I have with my shoulder (and whatever precautions are sensible given my weight), I have relatively few musculo-skeletal or cardiovascular limitations. I like to think that keeping my level of "functional fitness" highly tuned now will diminish or at least delay whatever future might need to be faced there.

Progress since October: Returned to an agreeable frequency of TKD classes in January and recently started incorporating more challenge and strength training. I'm looking for some kind of outrageous goal for the second half of this year -- maybe running a 5K or participating in a TKD tournament. We'll see.

Just wanted to put that out there for myself.

I hear you, and agree. Body image is great and all, but I've never been tightly wound about that.

Health and capacity to DO, now... that's the stuff of dreams.
