Rode my bike to work again today, which means I've managed it twice this week. (No, I haven't ridden home yet today, but hey. That's kind of safe to assume; if weather or other circumstance prevents it, then I don't consider myself to be at fault.)

Good ride this morning...nice breeze, though quite sweaty despite not riding particularly hard. If I want to do this more than twice/week, I'll have to investigate more effective ways to cool down once I get here or else start departing from the house much, much earlier. (Guess which I'd prefer?)

I can talk all I want about incremental fuel savings* and cardiovascular exercise, but today I'm feeling the FUN FACTOR more than anything else. I love having that 30 minutes of thoughts just tumbling through my brain. There are large patches of red clover along the route that smell wonderful. And what is it about biking that makes people smile and wave at you? Cars *almost never* want to yield to another car, but they're very pleasant about letting me cross. So that's cool.

Also, I still love telling people that I rode my bike to work, but I haven't had a chance to tell anybody yet today. Can't wait to use this phrase in middle-management-speak to decribe the effort: "I'd say the LOE is within acceptable parameters, but the process could use some optimization."

*The route I follow is about 3.4 miles. My car typically gets about 20 miles/gallon, so I'd have to use pedal power for three round trips to save one gallon of fuel. I'd like to manage a bike commute thrice/week, but it's hard to say whether life will allow that. Going to stick with the goal of twice/week for the next couple of weeks and then re-evaluate.

Yay! I wonder how far it is to school from here. Not that I even have a bike, and not that I most every day have a crap ton of stuff to haul back and forth. :-)

There are a lot of factors that make my bike commute possible -- a flat, low-traffic route; some flexibility with arrival time; and not much to carry -- most of which I think your geography and responsibilities won't allow. So it's not like you're a slacker or anything.

One really helpful resource was www.mapmyride.com, where I found a few options for my own ride and links to bike commuting groups in the area.
