EFF YEAH organizing
Jul. 8th, 2013 04:31 pmThis could have been a weekend of THWART, but my inner editor has decided to cut the film such that it looked like VICTORY and DOUGHNUTS instead.
I was at the office on Friday, which was okay, because I checked many things off the list while there wasn't anybody else around to talkat to me -- you know, the stuff that requires an hour or so of uninterrupted concentration? Checkity-check.
I also got to spend my lunch break finishing some re-reading of 10K samples as part of
nataliesee's Crit Camp, an experience I cannot recommend enough even though I'm not done with it yet. And no, this is not a pathetic attempt to have her evaluate my crit letters favorably, because she probably doesn't even read my LJ so there. Thank goodness I'm not an *actual* writer, because it's driving me nuts just to wait on her critique of my critique; I can't imagine what a basket case I'd be if I'd submitted work of my own to the group. YEESH.
Friday evening featured improvised Greek pasta salad (with farm-fresh veggies) and bonus use of leftovers before they went bad. Also, took and a bit of a road trip with
diermuid, who got me a real Boston Creme doughnut from Dunkin Donuts, which have now begun to spring up around here. Where were you when I was pregnant, DD? Way off in Lawrence, too far to send then-husband to fetch a Boston Creme or eight, that's where. But now, I have the DD app, so look out everybody.
On Saturday, I had grand plans to powerwash the bejeezus outta the back fence but NO. I couldn't get the darn machine to work. I checked and rechecked the power supply and water supply. No joy...just a flaccid spurt of water. It was horrible. SADNESS. Instead, I channeled that energy into emptying the back yard shed and reorganized everything. OMG so sweaty and filthy, but so glorious to have done that I posted pictures to FB. After that, a much-needed shower, followed by a trip to Sears to insist that they did indeed have the sort of bike rack that sits on the floor of one's garage such that a bike can be wheeled into it. (Those things that mount on the wall or ceiling only work if the bike-riders in the family are tall enough and strong enough to use them, see.) And LO, they had three in stock, all of which I purchased with my remaining birthday money and began assembling once home.
Saturday evening, I finally took some neighbor friends up on their offer to come on over for drinks. We wandered around the corner and spent a few fun and low-key hours shooting terrible pool, flinging innuendo with the bocce balls, and roasting marshmallows. Stumbled home mildly drunk. Slept hard and woke without a hangover, because it pays to have Celtic patron deities, let me tell you. Even better: daughter who works at the local doughnut shop, grateful to have been able to borrow my car for the commute to work, brought home leftover doughnuts to share with the family. YAY.
Sunday, we'd planned to do So Much Concrete You Wouldn't Even Believe Me, but NO. We'd run out of the little pebbles we were pressing into the top layer of the quick-setting concrete and could not find more bags of that kind ANYWHERE. Truly, I'm at the point of picking some of them out of the concrete stepping stones we've already done just so I can carry it to a desperate pilgrimage of local gardening centers. So that was disappointing. We decided to have lunch at Panera after our failed shopping, where I was informed that I could have a FREE birthday pastry. (I know. I shouldn't be so sugar-motivated. It's terrible.) On the way home,
diermuid suggested a nap. I didn't wanna, but OMG it was the BEST.
I napped hard for close to three hours and it completely changed my world. Made pork tenderloin with balsamic glaze and sweet potato fries for dinner, after which I finished assembling the bike racks all by myself, TYVM. Each holds two bikes, so I brought one out to the newly organized shed for the two bikes still stored there, and then
diermuid joined me to clear a quadrant of the garage for the other two racks for the four bikes accessed most often from there. I have bug bites all over my legs, but WOW was it ever worth it. We made a trip to the big recycling bins that will accept big cardboard pieces, then another quick shower, and then bed.
Most of my days are filled with recurring tasks -- dishes, laundry, etc. It gets discouraging, because a thing you accomplish one day still needs to be done the next day. But these projects tend to stay "finished" for a longer period of time, which somehow feels more satisfying. Not sure what I'm going to tackle this week/weekend. Isn't the suspense just *killing* you?
