saffronhare: (mmm bork! bork! bork!)

Last weekend, [livejournal.com profile] diermuid bought a flat of perfectly lovely apricots because OMG they looked wonderful and we needed about four for a recipe we'd planned this week. Cut to Tuesday, when I was prepping the marinate those apricots would be used in. I thought I was being all clever dunking them in hot water and then cold water to peel the skins off. Very sticky process, but not so bad. Then I started halving them to get the pits out and slicing 'em up. Except a number of them had started molding from the inside. Not good. I decided to use ALL THE APRICOTS. Four of them I used in the recipe; the others, I thought, I'd dehydrate.

Enter the Internet, with an approach to oven-drying fruit, because I absolutely coult not find the electric dehydrator-inator I know we have *somewhere* in the house. Getting slippery slices of apricot to stay on toppa cooling racks placed on cookie sheets was very tricky, but I managed it. (How is something slippery and sticky at the same time? Jeez.) They were finally done just before bedtime, when I was tired out of my mind and decided to let them sit in the cold oven overnight because, hey, DRIED and PRESERVED. Which worked out fine. But then I totally forgot they were in the oven for the *whole day* and began preheating the oven to roast some mushrooms for last night's dinner. EGAD. I pulled them out before anything truly horrible happened, but now I don't so much have dried apricots as apricot jerky. Ah, well. We'll mix 'em with some craisins and almonds and it'll be fine for munching. At least now they won't rot?

Also, I got my hair cut last night before I shaved my head, which is a good thing. I'm happy with the haircut and like the way she styled it -- for ACTION. See, I said, oh, you don't really need to style it because I'm just going to taekwondo and I'm going to sweat so very much. And she said, have I ever got the product for you. It's a men's styling pomade, sort of, and it smells so good I'm going to give myself whiplash trying to sniff my own hair. Today's styling effort doesn't look quite so jazzy as when she did it, but it definitely looks better than my usual "meh" approach and it's staying in place without being sticky. So YAY for chemistry and learning things!
