Over the next few months, I'd like to add some furniture to my apartment -- just a few basic things, not really an emergency. But I do want to purchase items that have been gently used, rather than brand new, and I think I'd rather not wait for yard sale season again. We'll see.

What second-hand furniture stores do you like for things such as desks, side tables, and bookshelves? I'd really love to find some wall-mounted shelves (rather than floor-space-needing shelves) because there's a lot of vertical space and not as much perimeter space.

Thanks!

For the shelves on our walls, we just got 2x4s whatever length we wanted, and a couple of brackets. Ended up paying about $7 per shelf (at Home Depot).

That's a good idea!

those kind of shelves, probably Restore. For other furniture, I like to go to the thrift shops in the rich part of town (there's a goodwill on Santa Fe), since they throw things out way too soon. The strip of them in Waldo (my usual haunt) is probably a little more roughly used than you want.

I also have a friend who will be selling a glass-top computer corner desk -- can send you a pic if you're interested.

You're kidding, right? ::giggle::

No, thank you...I've put the days of owning glass-topped furniture behind me, if you'll forgive the pun.

And I'd totally forgotten ReStore. Yay!

Check put Revival at 75tth and Metcalf. They sell gently used furniture and are very reasonable price wise.

Oh, that's right -- and they're right next to Dunn Brothers and Half-Price Books, so BONUS on the browsing. Thank you!

That's where you almost bought the chair when we went.

I still remember that chair fondly.

We have sometimes bought from the City Union Mission 2nd Chance store on Wornall - it's hit-or-miss, of course, but we got our living room tables from them. They have more furniture in the summer, when they can set out trailers or storage units for it.

There's a thrift store on Kaw Dr. right around the corner from the house. It's a rabbit warren once you get inside, and it's hit or miss, of course, but damn it's full of stuff!

So there is Good JuJu- it is the mecca of awesome... only happens the 1st weekend of the month down in the west bottoms.

There is a little place on Truman road in independence called Gramdpa's or something. It is hit or miss- but you can find amazing antique- type stuff CHEAP!

Encore on Johnson Dr near Neiman in Shawnee is a great place to get cool used furniture.

I'd echo the Habitat Restore for wall shelves

There's a new thrift shop at 95th and Nall (savers) that has good stuff in general, although not a lot of furniture. At the same intersection, in the parking lot with "Nuts and Bolts" hardware there's another thrift shop called "blessings abound" that's decent too.

Savers and Blessings Abound are in my neighborhood; I've browsed there already. Pretty good for younger kids' stuff and accessories, but not so much for furniture. But I'd wondered where Encore was!
