It's been a productive day, but my brain is all done. So I've swiped this meme from
rougewench for some fun:
LAST SHOW ADDED TO YOUR RESUME:
Holy crap, I really seriously can't remember. It must have been Tobacco Road, but it doesn't feel like I've been away for so long. Surely there's something else. ::sigh::
LAST SHOW YOU AUDITIONED FOR:
A show
lightonthesill envisioned, but which didn't mature beyond the brainchild stage. Memorably enough, I got to smack
nottygypsy on the ass and slap
agrnmn.
DID YOU GET IT:
Nope. The show, it did not happen after all. ::iz sad::
LAST SONG YOU USED AT AN AUDITION:
Something for Two By Two, at the Jewish Community Center in Providence, RI. It was awful and I erased it from my mind immediately, though I was really awesome in the dance number and stayed on as AD. In my defense, I *told* them I was very bad, and they made me sing anyway.
FAVORITE MUSICAL(s):
I don't generally like the sad and angsty ones, but enjoy many other musicals. Even Sondheim, sometimes. :P
FAVORITE PLAY:
Oh, man. I don't really groove on the plays that are about people in pain, even though I've heard all sorts of raves about how artful and beautiful they are. There's enough pain in the beauty of real life; I'll go for less bittersweet entertainment on stage, thank you.
FAVORITE ROLE YOU'VE PLAYED, AND FROM WHAT SHOW?
I like to think I haven't yet played my favorite role. Thankfully, I've never been the ingenue type. I really liked playing Melanie Kurtz, from Thunder Rock. Her lines, her journey, and the message of that play have really stuck with me in the intervening 20 years (give or take).
FAVORITE ROLE OVERALL THAT I WOULD LOVE TO PLAY:
No idea. I tend to gravitate more toward shows or directors rather than roles, but I'd love to do something really demanding.
SUPERSTITION:
I try to avoid telling people "good luck." Once in a while I remember not to name That Scottish Play. It's not something I get all cranked up about, though.
YOUR GOAL IN SHOW BUSINESS:
I like to feel as if I've done Good Work, but that's really about it. I was always pleased when a director said they thought I was good to work with.
FAVORITE DIRECTOR YOU HAVE EVER WORKED WITH:
We had a Russian graduate student who directed me and two other women in Smirnova's Birthday in the winter/spring of my senior year at KU. She was so vastly different than any other American director I've worked with. Her approach to the craft really bent my brain in ways it hadn't been before and I *loved* it. She demanded a lot of us. In a way, the character was probably more like me than I was comfortable with, and it broke me open a bit.
WHAT WAS YOUR VERY FIRST SHOW?:
Little Bo Peep, a ballet recital when I was about six years old. I was a sheep.
HAVE YOU EVER HAD A DANCE SOLO?:
Yes.
HAVE YOU EVER HAD A SINGING SOLO?
Yes.
HAVE YOU EVER BEEN THE LAST PERSON TO TAKE A BOW?
No.
HAVE YOU BEEN TO NEW YORK?
Yes. I saw some of the best and worst theatre of my life there.
HAVE YOU BEEN TO LA?:
Nope.
WHAT'S THE SCARIEST PART OF AN AUDITION?:
Auditions don't frighten me at all (even if I have to sing). They're thrilling. I worry afterwards, trying to be patient as I wait for a call-back. Or not.
WHAT'S THE BEST PART OF AN AUDITION?:
Playing, and making accidental brilliance. I'll take risks onstage and with auditions that I never would otherwise. I particularly like it when an audition gives me an excuse to do an accent.
NAME A SHOW YOU WOULD NEVER DO AGAIN:
Tobacco Road. It was a pretty bruising experience overall, and not just because I got to sit in a junk pile for most of the time.
NAME A SHOW YOU COULD DO FOR YEARS:
Dunno.
WHAT ARE YOU AUDITIONING FOR NEXT?
Er. Something going up about six years from now, when I might have the time to devote to a rehearsal schedule. (sigh) I really miss it, but life is calling me in other directions right now. I've got enough roles to play as it is!
DO YOU KEEP IN TOUCH WITH PAST CAST MEMBERS?:
Not so much. I've moved away, mostly. There is one person on Facebook who did theatre with me at, of all places, West Point. He directed both Moby Dick Rehearsed (in which I was Pip the Cabin Boy) and The Philadelphia Story (in which I was a very short and brunette imitator of Katharine Hepburn).
ON A SCALE OF 1-10, HOW IMPORTANT IS GETTING PAID?:
I don't think I've ever been paid for acting, but I sure wouldn't turn it down. Acting has always been extracurricular for me, as I don't have the resources (or desire) to pursue it as a career. Which means it takes a back seat to paying work. :)
SOMETHING EMBARRASSING OR UNEXPECTED THAT HAPPENED TO YOU WHILE ON-STAGE?:
I stripped off my shirt in some sort of wacky drinking thing (like you do, when you're in a Russian play) and discovered my tits were about two feet away from
agrnmn's father. "I like that girl," he reportedly commented, while waiting to take me to dinner with the family after the show.
WHO IS THE MOST DIFFICULT PERSON (ON STAGE OR OFF) THAT YOU HAVE EVER WORKED WITH?:
The director for Tobacco Road, who is still (I think) on the KU theatre faculty.
EVER BEEN NAKED ONSTAGE?:
Shirtless, but not actually nekkid.
HAVE YOU EVER BEEN KILLED?:
Died, yes.
BEEN DRUNK?:
Yes.
PLAYED SOMEONE HALF YOUR AGE?:
No.
PLAYED SOMEONE TWICE YOUR AGE?:
Yes.
CRIED?:
Yes.
FIRED A GUN?
No.
BEEN DRENCHED?
No.
BEEN IN A DREAM SEQUENCE?
I've been a ghost in somebody else's weird waking dream.
BEEN KISSED?:
Yes.
