Attempted Contemplation
Dec. 22nd, 2003 12:53 pmPublic Safety Notice: my answers to this survey meme (taken from
skynock by way of
featherynscale) are likely to swing from appallingly pedestrian to predictably appalling.
1. What did you do in 2003 that you'd never done before?
There's a lot on the list. But the common denominator was that I really truly started to say "uncle" to the universe and give in a bit to chaos. Terrifying, I tell you.
2. Did you keep your new year's resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
Um. I don't think I made any resolutions, which is a new thing for me. I think I'll do the same this year.
3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
Yes.
4. Did anyone close to you die?
Yes. Helping someone die may be a great gift to the dying but it sure sucks for the survivors.
5. What countries did you visit?
Meditatively, I'm pretty sure I went to ancient Egypt a few times. Physically, this is the first year in many that I didn't really travel for pleasure.
6. What would you like to have in 2004 that you lacked in 2003?
More financial security. But I hate to limit myself there. I really should say -- health, happiness and all that.
7. What date from 2003 will remain etched upon your memory?
New Year's Day, during which I watched over my newborn daughter propped up in a hospital bed with an IV in her scalp.
8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
Not destroying my marriage.
9. What was your biggest failure?
I refuse to answer this, on the grounds that it hurts too much to catalog and rank my failures.
10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
Yes. I managed to crack my tailbone. But I also avoided pneumonia. Some you win, some you lose.
11. What was the best thing you bought?
The DVD player, I think. Now we can tempt friends over to our place for random movie-watching while the kids sleep (a great boon to our pathetic social lives).
12. Whose behavior merited celebration?
I'll say what
featherynscale did, "Damned near everybody." So many people around me have done things that terrified them, that pushed their boundaries for pain and love, that I'm constantly amazed by their choice to be around me. On top of that, I celebrate the behavior of my kids -- who are learning to walk and talk; to leap and dance and question; and do magic and maths at an incredible rate.
13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?
Mostly my own. It's been a rough year, and I'm not pleased with some of the things I'm learning about my response strategies and limits.
14. Where did most of your money go?
Other than mortgage, our money went to childcare. At $300/week, it was cheap as childcare goes. But it had us on the ragged edge of disaster and actually asking our parents for money this fall.
15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
Tequila Mockingbirds and Monkey Shots (other exciting memories are still overshadowed for the moment)
16. What song will always remind you of 2003?
That dirgy chant we keep making fun of -- We approach the sacred grove...thunk!
17. Compared to this time last year, are you happier or sadder?
Older
ii. thinner or fatter?
Thinner (But given that at this time last year I was only a few days postpartum, that's not much to brag about.)
iii. richer or poorer?
Poorer, but with better assets.
18. What do you wish you'd done more of?
Letting my guard down.
19. What do you wish you'd done less of?
Taking bits out of my husband's hide (and not in a good way).
20. How will you be spending Christmas?
Mostly at home (we don't have to travel or welcome anybody in particular to our home for an Event). Will spend some time with
agrnmn's family, which should be short-term fun.
22. Did you fall in love in 2003?
Over and over and over again, with mostly the same people. It was good.
23. How many one night stands?
::blink:: Gee, too many to count.
24. What was your favourite TV programme?
I hate to admit it, but I've got a shameful addiction to CSI.
25. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?
I have permitted many people into my life who I would ordinarily have shut out. I know it's not the same, but tolerance is a new thing for me.
26. What was the best book you read?
The DaVinci Code was awesome, but I've read very little this year otherwise. :sigh:
27. What was your greatest musical discovery?
Rob Zombie. And belly-dancing. Yay.
28. What did you want and get?
Relative stability in home and work life.
29. What did you want and not get?
A certain...firmness...of body for myself.
30. What was your favourite film of this year?
I don't get out enough. And I'm a movie slut, so don't expect critical viewing from me. (For example, I loved Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle.)
31. What did you do on your birthday?
Crap, I don't remember. But I'm certain I got to sleep in and later got laid, which is good.
32. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
more orgasms (but can you really ever have enough?)
33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2003?
Trying to stay out of Old Navy and get in touch with my inner hottitude.
34. What kept you sane?
The clan.
35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
I'm fascinated by the Peter Jackson right now. Not in a sexual way, but in the sense that he must have an amazing amount of vision and charisma and...whatever. I want to make a movie with him. (Well, him and Juliette Binoche, who was not in the news enough for me. And Uma Thurman. yum.)
36. What political issue stirred you the most?
Oh, don't get me started. Mostly, the un-American backlash.
37. Who did you miss?
My old brown dogs.
38. Who was the best new person you met?
Wow. I couldn't say. This has been a banner year, which followed last year as a banner year too. We've built a very large social circle for a pair of elitist introverts.
39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2003.
It's okay if the kitchen is messy -- go to bed with your husband anyway.
40. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year.
"The treasure is not the end." ~ from The Hero's Lament
