Upping the Idiom
Okay, I'll bite:
Age: 34
Region: Born in RI; lived in MA, VA, RI, KS, MN, Germany and Belgium (with an amazing mix of American accents). For entertainment value, I've inserted some of the pronunciations I use when I'm angry, drunk or not thinking.
WHAT DO YOU CALL:
1. A body of water, smaller than a river, contained within relatively narrow banks?
Creek. Sometimes "that small river" [rivah]
2. The thing you push around the grocery store?
cart [caht]
3. A metal container to carry a meal in?
lunchbox
4. The thing that you cook bacon and eggs in?
frying pan (a skillet is electric)
5. The piece of furniture that seats three people?
couch [or, sofer]
6. The device on the outside of the house that carries rain off the roof?
gutter [guttah]
7. The covered area outside a house where people sit in the evening?
porch is out front, patio is out back
8. Carbonated, sweetened, non-alcoholic beverages?
soda or coke (regardless of brand)
9. A flat, round breakfast food served with syrup?
pancake
10. A long sandwich designed to be a whole meal in itself?
a grindah (I don't think I ever say "grinder") or sub sandwich (never just a "sub")
11. The piece of clothing worn by men at the beach?
bathing suit, or "ohmigodlookitthatTHING"
12. Shoes worn for sports?
sneakers [or sneakiz]
13. Putting a room in order?
puttering, straightening up
14. A flying insect that glows in the dark?
firefly
15. The little insect that curls up into a ball?
a bug. Really, they're all bugs unless they're mosquitos or bees.
16. The children's playground equipment where one kid sits on one side and goes up while the other sits on the other side and goes down?
teeter-totter [teetah-tottah, sometimes see-sawr]
17. How do you eat your pizza?
If it's a big piece, I fold it in half at the crust to keep from spilling, then go from point to crust. Then I eat the crust.
18. What's it called when private citizens put up signs and sell their used stuff?
Yard sale [yahd sale]
19. What's the evening meal?
dinner [dinnah]; supper is sometimes what we call the Sunday afternoon family meal thingie
20. The thing under a house where the furnace and perhaps a rec room are?
basement
21. An unusually heavy rain which does not last long.
rain is simply rain until it is a hurricane, even if it's raining "wicked hahd"
22. A window covering on rollers that pulls down.
