shiiinnnnnyyyyy
Dec. 31st, 2007 05:50 pmToday, I bought a (mostly) new car.
While I will mourn the Minivan Galactica, it was ten years old. A noble car, to be sure. Paid off. Transporter of beds and sofas for friends everywhere. But damn...the transmission was slipping, the tires were giving out, the brakes needed fixing (again), and the engine light kept blinking at me. I decided that, while I hadn't quite driven it into the ground, I'd sure driven it into a good limp. And I was ready to make a change before the maintenance costs got to be more than I could stomach. (Realistically, I was looking at several hundred dollars over the next few months, plus the ongoing hassles of maintaining an older car.) I am comfortable with the knowledge that checking the fluids every morning is not really something I want to be doing.
I'd been doing my homework for the last few months and put things into motion yesterday. CarMax treated me fairly -- I traded in the minivan and used their offer as down payment on a 2004 Jeep Liberty. It'll be a bit tricksy until the house sells, but manageable.
Drives real nice, with a roomy enough backseat that two carseats and one other person can comfortably fit. The back, while not big enough to fit
featherynscale's big green couch, is large enough for just about anything I would typically need to transport. Gas mileage is comparable to the minivan; not ideal, but certainly an amount I'm used to budgeting for. I am satisfied.* Also, it is so very pretty. And blue. And pretty.
PB thinks it should be named Olaf. Dunno why. We'll see. :)
*This is a vast understatement. I was so excited that I drove off in the new car without remembering to claim the jumper cables and carseats we'd removed from the van and secured in a locker at CarMax. They laughed a lot when I called to see if I can go get those things tomorrow. Sure, they said. Like the car? YES. Whoops.
