Oh. The. Horror.

So, I'm sitting with Princess Boredom and Fiona Pie at dinner when they ask about my "I Voted!" sticker. After a moment to joke about how much fun my left breast had voting -- I was so excited, see, that my nipple effectively operated the touch-sensitive screen -- I mentioned that PB will be old enough to vote in the next Presidential election.

"Do I have to?" she asked, in all seriousness. I'll give you a moment to absorb that, because I sure needed one.

I suspect the HORROR on my face began to communicate to her what a blasphemous question that was. I caught my breath and blinked a lot, and we started to laugh. I pointed out how very excited she was to reach the legal age for driving; how delighted we figured she'd be when she could order a drink (or purchase really good cough syrup) for herself. Why is the right to vote somehow less significant in her mind?

"I should call your grandfather this very second and tell him what you just said," I threatened. Then, it was her turn to be horrified. Still, I DESPAIR. Egad. I mean, SRSLY.

Did she ever say why she dreaded it? At a guess from temperment, I'd say she finds it uninteresting... but without knowing, it's hard to say where to start. She MAY enjoy politifact.com's approach to finding lying liars that lie.

I am forwarding you an email to give to Princess right now.

Tell her that this is from one of your friend's grandmothers. Which it is. I <3 my nana.

I got that -- thank you!

wow! 0.0 it's a real wake-up call that a kid raised by/with/around such adamant voters could be apathetic about voting... guess I need to start talking it up with Birdy now! (then again, I didn't get myself registered in time to vote this year... so maybe I need to look inward first)

I don't think she's necessarily apathetic. As we discussed it more, she expressed confusion about voting and some worry about whether she'd know what to do.

That's why Prop 19, the marijuana legalization proposition failed out here. The young ones, whom it really affected, didn't turn out to vote. Our son is "infected" by our voting all the time throughout his childhood, but a lot of his group are, to put it nicely, overwhelmed by their world. Oh the humanity!
