The trouble with clippings.
I was doing a bit of weeding in the garden beds over the weekend and noticed a problem with clippings. See, we've got mulch laid around the tree bases and in the beds to help with weed control and moisture, etc. What happens is that when the mowing and edging happens, all the clippings get blown up into the mulch and it looks all icky. There's no reasonable way to get them off. Is there some way to prevent it? I don't know. Such a stupid problem to have, right?
Of the three new plants I put in last summer, only one survived -- the butterfly bush. It's positively thriving. The second butterfly bush never really recovered from the late-season transplant. Lesson learned. The hydrangea? Not so much. Dead as dead can be. I think that was mostly a case of me wanting to put something where it really shouldn't have gone.
The side bed (on the north side) of the house is so empty. I'd like to fill it in with some of the irises and lilies I need to divide come fall. It's a huge, long rectangle of a space, with weird planning. Will have to think about what to add. Maybe I'll post a picture and ask for suggestions. There's also the "swamp," where the mildly dysfunctaional sump pump drains.
The front bed is almost over-full at this point, what with lilies and princess spirea, and it's kind of a one-note wonder in terms of color and height and whatnot. Those plants are also getting too big for their britches, if that makes any sense, and I'd like to add a bit of variety. Maybe I can lay my hands on some bulbs in the fall? Hrm.
